Ryan is a Director of Medical Bioethics at Kaiser Permanente Southern California, where he leads clinical ethics consultation, education, and policy and program development. His scholarship examines how social and institutional structures shape ethical problems in health care, especially as it relates to issues of autonomy, decisional capacity, and patient rights. His ethnographic research on Assisted Outpatient Treatment examined how clinicians and patients navigate clinical decision-making about psychiatric medications in mandated mental health care. His current scholarship builds on this work by bridging bioethics and social scientific methods to bolster patient-centered care and through a justice-based lens. Ryan completed his MSW and PhD in Social Welfare at UCLA, and a Medical Ethics Fellowship with Weill Cornell Medicine. He previously served as an Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine
